Can AI live up to the hype? There is a continuous stream of companies making ever grander promises about what AI can do. And AI isn’t always able to deliver.

We’ve already seen expensive mistakes and inaccessible, bland experiences. Perhaps surprisingly, we’ve heard from our largest enterprise customers that they won’t buy systems and software that have AI built in because of its many issues and risks.

So, what practical ways can AI help create successful interactive content? Our team explored what’s possible and has found five ways to use LLMs (Large Language Models, such as ChatGPT or Gemini) to boost rather than harm your interactive project.

Stornaway’s approach to AI

To start, where does Stornaway stand in regards to AI?

There are different opportunities within the two main sets of AI tools for interactive video, generative AI media creation tools such as Adobe Firefly, Midjourney or Synthesia to create video clips, and Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT or Gemini to help create an interactive journey design. Generative AI media creation holds a distinct set of capabilities (that we will cover in a separate article), and which Stornaway creators have access to through our integration with Adobe Express. However, in this article, we’ll be looking directly at LLMs for designing interactive journeys.

Opening the Stornaway editor, you’ll notice that there are no prompts to check out the latest AI feature. In fact, there’s no AI built into the platform itself.

While other applications are crowding their interfaces with prompts, our Co-Founder and CTO, Ru Howe, happily describes the Stornaway team as somewhat sceptical. There’s a wide range of hurdles to navigate when incorporating AI, and not just the technical ones.

As a company driven by ethics, selecting an LLM to work with presents a challenge. There are sustainability questions to answer over energy and water use. And, to get to the blunt and honest truth, the considerations over reliability and data security are very real.

However, to balance the pros with the cons, ChatGPT and other LLMs can be a big help to interactive video creation, if used in the right way.

Five practical ways to use ChatGPT to create interactive video

Our team has mainly experimented with ChatGPT, so we’ll run through a few ways it can help. These tips can be used with Gemini, Claude or any LLM.

Generate a basic structure

For some, a blank page is a place of excitement. A space for new possibilities. For others, it’s a place of overwhelm. So many ideas, but where to start? If you’re in the latter camp, ChatGPT is great for getting you going with a basic structure.

Be detailed in your prompt. Don’t forget to include specific requirements, such as ‘two or three options at each decision moment’, and limitations. Remember that anything you get back won’t be ready to publish, but it will provide a comprehensive foundation. From here, you can edit, tweak or completely reinvent, but it will have got you off that dreaded blank page.

Keep building out prompts

Once you have sent your first prompt and received your suggested outline, don’t be afraid to refine your request. Add in more details that you may have missed the first time around. Add more specifics if it’s not quite hit the spot, or re-evaluate the brief.

You can also submit screenshots of your current Stornaway story map and ask for useful additions and tips on how to refine it further. Remember that prompts can be as long or as detailed as you like.

Spot weak points in your story map

Another useful way to use ChatGPT to create interactive video is to spot weak moments or flaws in the viewer experience. Are there any options that lead to nowhere? Is there somewhere that you can get caught in a loop? Are there any other problematic areas?

Catch issues as early as possible and smooth the kinks out to save even greater time and effort rectifying them later on.

Storyboard your project with Adobe Firefly

When crafting an interactive project, our top tip is to complete the entire story map first with Stornaway’s built-in placeholder videos. This means you can ‘play’ the experience through before you start adding media to get a feel for how the story will flow.

Our integration with Adobe Express makes it easy to use Adobe’s Firefly AI to generate images and videos that give stakeholders a real flavor of the finished project. This visual indication of future content makes sure everyone is on the same page when creating your interactive project.

Give your basic ideas some order

You’ve got ideas, but they are all over the place. Some are from that brainstorming session, some from those meeting minutes and some you’ve just jotted down in your notepad. On top of that, the project team has shared their thoughts on what this interactive project should include.

To bring all this together, use ChatGPT to create its own brief. Organise all those ideas and thoughts into something coherent. Tweak, restructure and reformat as needed, helping to make sure everyone’s expectations are met before you start drafting a story map.

Use ChatGPT to create interactive videos, but only in the right way

These practical ways to use ChatGPT to create interactive videos can be helpful to overwhelmed creators. However, we would recommend harnessing the power of human creativity and the skillset within your content creation team before resorting to LLMs. Make the most of ChatGPT as a great sounding board and lay a good foundation for your interactive storytelling.
