Stornaway xAPI Verb IRI: https://stornaway.io/xapi/verbs/recorded

Display: recorded (en-US)

Meaning: A value that a Stornaway interactive video keeps track of has changed. The record carries the variable’s name and its new value.

Why this verb exists

Stornaway modules keep running values as a learner works through them: a score, a percentage complete, whether a question was answered correctly, a completion flag. Authors set these up when they build the module.

A change to one of those values is not something the learner did. It is the module’s own bookkeeping, triggered by what the learner did. The standard xAPI verbs all describe learner actions, so using one of them for these records would make a system update look like a person’s action. This verb keeps the two apart, so reports can separate what learners did from what the module worked out.

How Stornaway uses it

Object name: “VAR: ” followed by the variable name and the island that caused the change, for example “VAR: score ← [F1] Skills check Q1”. Object description: “VAR: ” followed by the variable name. Result response: the variable’s new value, as text. Context: the learner’s session id, and the module as the parent activity.

One statement is sent each time a tracked value changes. Values that only ever rise, such as a progress percentage, use “progressed” instead, and the module’s completion flag also produces a “completed” statement.

Player settings, such as whether captions are on, are never recorded.
